Blue Waffle Disease: Is It A Real STI Or A Figment Of Panic?

The talks of the blue waffles disease began in the year 2010. In that year, an image of pus-covered, blue-tinted, lesion-filled labia that was very disturbing surfaced online. People claimed that type of situation to be the result of an STD or sexually transmitted disease. Which can also be referred to as STI or sexually transmitted infection.

Let’s read more about it!

What were the claims of the blue waffle disease?

The labia in the picture were real. But the blue waffles disease is claimed not to be real. The photo of the labia was very unsettling and so were its claims. It was said that blue waffles disease is such an STI that only affected the vagina

Another popular claim was that the blue waffle disease only occurred in a female who has had many sex partners.

You must be wondering why this so-called disease has been named after a food item. Well, the name waffle was used in terms of slang for the vagina. The word “blue” was added to point out serious vaginal infection.

Blue waffle STD had another rumor that people who suffered from this, get bruising, lesions, and blue discoloration.

When short-term research was done, it revealed that there is or was not such disease by the name of blue waffles in the medical world. Even the symptoms of this disease were relatable to other STDs.

However, several STDs can cause lesions and discharge in sexually active people.

The proactivity of sexually transmitted disease

So, the blue waffle disease does not exist, other sexually transmitted infections can be harmful too. Always keep a check on your genitals for any signs or symptoms of STI when you are sexually active

Below are given the signs and symptoms which have occurred during the cases of most common STIs:

1. Chlamydia

Chlamydia can occur in both men and women and is considered to be very common. This type of STI is caused when someone is involved in having anal, oral, or vaginal sex.

If no actions will be taken against it, many complications may arise. In severe cases, it also affects the fertility of the woman. But do not worry, it can be treated and to end this infection successfully, you and your partner, both need to be treated.

Sometimes people get chlamydia without any prior symptoms. As to get the sight of visible symptoms, it might take several weeks.

When the vagina gets affected, you may go through the symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge and burning sensation while urinating.

When the penis or testicles get this infection, you might get symptoms such as a burning sensation while urinating, discharge from the penis, and swelling paired with pain on one or both the testicles.

When you had anal sex, chlamydia might spread on the rectum from another part, such as the vagina. In such a case, you might feel symptoms such as pain in the rectum, discharge from the rectum, and in severe cases even bleeding from the rectum.

2. Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

As the name suggests, this type of STI occurs in the vagina. Thus, it is a very common disease in women aged 15 to 44. When there is an imbalance in the bacterial level of the vagina, it gives rise to bacterial vaginosis.

The cause of this disease is not clear yet. But activities that result in the alteration of the pH balance of the vagina, might increase the risk associated with this disease. By activities, we mean being sexually active with multiple partners and douching.

The difficult part is that this disease does not has any particular symptom. But be alert if your experience the following:

  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • White or greyish thin discharge from the vagina
  • Itching or pain in the vagina
  • Getting a fishy odor after having sex
3. Genital herpes

This disease can be caused due to the presence of 2 type of virus:

  • HSV-1
  • HSV-2

These viruses spread through sexual contact. Once you have caught the virus; it lies inactive in the body and can become active anytime. There is indeed no cure for this disease.

The virus usually activates after 2 to 12 days after getting into the body. When the virus is active, you will be getting symptoms. Many people who get this infection go through mild or zero symptoms. The symptoms are stated below:

  • Scabs
  • Ulcers
  • Pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes present in the groin
  • Tiny white blisters
  • Itching
  • Fever and body aches
  • Small red bumps
4. Gonorrhea

This infection usually spreads in the genitals, rectum, and throat. The bacteria or virus that causes this disease enters while one is having anal, vaginal, or oral sex. The symptoms of this disease are usually negligible and depend on the sex of the person and location of occurrence.

A male might experience the following symptoms

  1. Swelling and pain in the testicles
  2. Yellow, green, or white discharge for the penis
  3. Burning sensation while urinating
A female will be experiencing the following symptoms

  1. Pain while having sex
  2. Bleeding from the vagina
  3. Lower abdominal pain
  4. Lots of vaginal discharge
  5. Pain or burning sensation while urinating
When the infection is caused in the rectum, the symptoms are

  1. Anal itching
  2. Pain
  3. Discharge from the rectum
  4. Rectal bleeding
  5. Pain while bowel movements
5. Human papillomavirus (HPV)

This is one of the most common STIs. In research conducted, out of 200 people who got HPV, 40 people got HPV through sexual contact.

There are many variations of this infection, so most sexually active people are likely to get some type of HPV in their lifetime. It is caused by skin contact and can affect the throat, mouth, rectum, and genitals.

This infection is common and might even cure on its own. The whole process does not include any signs or symptoms. Though, the virus stays in the body and can be transferred to your sexual partner.

The bottom line

So, the blue waffles disease might or might not be a rumor. But we should take the existing STDs seriously and be careful while having sexual contact.
