Dry Skin On Penis Bugging You? Know Its Causes & Treatment

Dry Skin On Penis: The skin present on the penis is especially sensitive and dry skin may cause discomfort. This may result in the skin being flaky, cracked and peeled. Symptoms such as glans (head), shaft, foreskin, frenulum, or scrotum can be visible in one or more sections of the penis. An individual may develop dry skin due to excess sexual intercourse or masturbation without lubes, chafing clothing and harsh soaps on their penis skin can also result in this situation.

There can be a  variety of conditions that cause dryness and irritation on the skin of the penis but sexually transmitted diseases are not one of them. Usually, this condition can be treated with the doctor’s help, by using prescribed moisturizers or by avoiding any harsh solution on the skin.

Some of the common reasons for dry skin on penis include:

  • Harsh soap and chemicals can also result in dry skin on penis.
  • Chronic disorders of the skin including eczema and psoriasis may also result in dry skin on penis.

You can experience any of the following symptoms if you have dry skin on your penis:

  • Tight skin, particularly after swimming or bathing
  • Skin that itches or flakes or comes off
  • Redness the skin
  • A skin rash
  • Fine lines or skin crevices
  • Deep skin cracks that could bleed

Causes of dry skin on penis

There could be several reasons why one experiences dry skin on their penis, such as:

  • Harsh body wash and soaps

While it is certainly necessary to clean your man’s parts, the products you use can be too harsh for the skin. Harsh soaps and body wash containing bleaching agents or other harmful chemicals can dry out your skin.  This is a warning that your skincare items are to blame if your dry skin is not restricted to just your penis.

Consider replacing your body wash or soap with one composed of natural ingredients.  The skin on the penis can dry out with a very hard soap or cleanser. Avoid any such chemicals and use only water to wash your penis. If you would like to use a cleanser. Consider moving to hypoallergenic detergent and softener fabric. In case these solutions do not work for you, consider taking medical help.

  • Allergic reaction

You may experience dry skin on the penis if you have an allergic reaction to latex, spermicide, a specific deodorant, or its ingredients. A red, itchy rash or swelling on their penis after wearing a latex condom is also experienced by men who are allergic to latex. Additional potential allergic signs are:

  1. Runny nose
  2. Wheezing
  3. Hives
  4. Sneezing
  5. Watery eyes
  6. Using condoms which are free of latex and not treated with spermicide (such as polyurethane or silicone) can be beneficial for someone dealing with this condition or has sensitive skin.

  • Sex or masturbation without lubes

Sex or masturbation can lead to friction and dry skin if done for a long time without any lubrication. Excessive friction can lead to the skin becoming dry. An individual who’s having sex or masturbates will increase his comfort with lubricants. There are a variety of lubricants available online.

Some lubes comprise ingredients like glycerine or parabens which can intensify dryness of penis. The choice of a water-dependent lubricant decreases the likelihood of the skin getting irritated on any sexual activity.

  • Wearing tight clothes

Tight clothes could be suffocating which can lead to dry skin. Wearing loose or cotton underwear and clothing tends to discourage stubbornness and helps the skin to breathe. Using a natural moisturiser such as coconut oil can help soothe the dry or chapped skin.

When you continue to wear tight clothes, the skin may be coated or rubbished and dry. Tight clothes will also increase the skin’s moisture, which can act as a breeding ground for fungi and increase the risk of infection. Wear light breathable fabrics with soft, supportive cotton underwear and looser clothes.

  • Yeast infection

A yeast infection in the skin can also result in the following:

  • dryness and peeling of the skin
  • Rashes or hives
  • White patches on the skin
  • Swelling or irritation on or around the penis
  • An unusual discharge from underneath the skin
  • Yeast infection can also result in pain during urination or sexual intercourse

Keep the area clean and dry and apply an antifungal cream on an overall basis as instructed by the manufacturer. You want to apply your ointments on the head of your penis for a penile yeast infection and under your prepuce foreskin until all symptoms go away.

To completely recover, it can take up to 10 days. Abstain from intercourse until all symptoms go away. Ask your doctor for advice if your symptoms continue or worsen.

  • Skin issues- eczema or psoriasis

In certain cases, chronic skin disorders like eczema or psoriasis cause dry skin in the penis. Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis may cause dryness, not in the genitals but the entire body.

Individuals with penile psoriasis usually suffer from psoriasis. Research published in Dermatology and Therapy in 2018 found that almost two-thirds of psoriatic patients will suffer from genital psoriasis at some stage in their lives (‘genital psoriasis affects about 63% of psoriasis at least once in their lives’).

  • Balanitis

Balanitis is swelling and inflammation of the glans of prepuces. It is most common in men and uncircumcised with poor hygiene. The most common health reason for balanitis is diabetes. Balanitis in the groyne and the genitals can cause itching, irritation and pain. The skin will flicker and peel off at times, however, this condition is not contagious.

Diagnosis

The conditions that cause dryness on the penis are usually diagnosed visually and the doctor will examine the skin closely and look for symptoms. The doctor may also ask you to undergo certain tests to rule out any other disease or conditions. One also try treating the condition by themselves, at home, by using:

  • Mild creams or highly-emollient creams can eliminate or reduce skin peeling
  • Substitute mild, hypoallergenic products for hard soaps or cleaning detergents
  • Switch to polyurethane condoms if you suspect that a latex allergy could cause dermatitis.
  • Try to use a skin emollient oil such as organic cocoa oil in the area.
  • Use lubricants while masturbating or during sexual activities
  • Maintain a clean penis,
  • Use countless antifungal drugs to help with thrush elimination

A variety of conditions may cause the skin to peel off the penis. Most of them are not healthy and may be treated successfully at home. This condition may also be a symptom linked to other medical issues such as an STI.

Approach a doctor if you experience any of the above-mentioned symptoms and the home remedies may not be helpful sometimes.
