As covid-19 is accompanied by a set of indications, so does the post covid situation. The following are the post covid syndromes:

Post Covid Syndrome
  • Fatigue:

It is a situation in which one loses one normal amount of strength and is not able to handle daily work.

  • Difficulty in breathing:

The pattern of breathing post covid is different than the normal breathing pattern. It is less deeply inhaled and less freely exhaled.

One might deal with sleep issues such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and RLS (restless legs syndrome).

  • Losing sensations such as smelling or tasting:

One can find themselves restricted from feeling the sensations. It is common in both pre and post covid syndromes.

  • Brain fog:

It is the brain’s incapability to stay focused or have a sharp memory. It is often considered as brain malfunctioning.

Who can experience these syndromes?

Getting any post covid syndrome depends on one’s health. How strong were you before testing positive for coronavirus? Or Are you suffering from any disease? It also depends on how well you were treated after getting coronavirus.

Post covid disorders can be found in individuals, who went to the ER with the concerning symptoms or who have progressed side effects and have to make a necessary stay at the hospital. Likewise, it can also happen to people who had mellow indications and were self-treated at home.

The significant thing to note is that these are individuals who probably do not need consultation from an expert during their real ailment, yet should ask for some specific consideration as these symptoms can increase in day-to-day life.

Some studies conclude that only 10% of people who tested positive for covid, were later developed with some post-covid syndrome. While other studies showed higher percentages, such as 70% of the survivors.

The people who are likely to develop post covid symptoms are:

  • Older adults over the age of 50
  • People who experienced a severe case of coronavirus.
  • People with underlying health conditions, particularly diseases related to cardiopulmonary, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

How to treat post covid syndrome?

Though, the whole coronavirus scenario is new to the world and experts are still learning the correct ways of treating it. Some syndromes can be treated at home while some need expert supervision. Below are the solutions you can try to overcome the post covid syndromes. Doctor’s consultation is advised if the syndromes persist after being treated.

Fatigue

Fatigue can be experienced by anyone who has been or going through some sort of disease, besides coronavirus. One can easily overcome fatigue by sticking to a regular sleep schedule, consuming a balanced diet, and doing body-friendly exercises.

Someone who is experiencing fatigue post covid should be careful while consuming food, avoid foods that are high in sodium, and keep yourself hydrated.

 Breathing

Post covid, someone might feel a severe or mild shortening of breath. If difficulty in breathing is at a mild stage, it can be overcome by remedies at home, such as:

  • Diaphragmatic breathing:

Sit in a relaxed position on the ground or a chair. This process involves longer exhalations and lower inhalations. Inhale through your nose and exhale through pursed lips, while tightening your muscles. Repeat for 5 minutes.

  • Drinking coffee:

Drinking coffee might feel strange because of the amount of caffeine it contains. But one can consume a cup of black coffee which will help in improving lung function. It also relaxes the muscles of the airways, making it easier to breathe.

  • Sleeping:

Some people experience shortness of breath while they sleep. This can be overcome by lying down while keeping a pillow between the legs and under the head. Keep in mind that both the pillows are of the same dimension.

This position helps in relaxing the airways, hence, making the lungs easier to breathe.

If the difficulty in breathing level is severe, it will be wise to go to the hospital. This will prevent suffering from serious consequences.

Joint pain

Joint pain can originate as a side-effect of covid medications. Follow the given measure to get rid of pain:

  • Applying steam on your joints. Soak a cloth in hot water and slightly press it against the affected knee. This will reduce the discomfort overnight.
  • Meditating and stretching techniques can help to reduce pain by lowering stress and inflammation.
  • Massaging the entire leg helps to manage pain and discomfort by releasing the tension.

Brain fog

By changing some lifestyle habits, one can be successful in treating brain fog.

  • Reduce screen-time by spending less time in front of computers and mobiles.
  • Get on a toxin-free diet.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and foods high in sodium
  • Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily.

Restoring sensations

One might get their taste and smell back in a few weeks. Meanwhile, they can try certain food that has a strong taste and smell. For instance, a raw garlic clove has a pungent taste and is so strong that it might give you tears in the eyes. Consuming it might make an extreme urge to the taste buds to start functioning again.

Chest pain

It is also known as heartburn. To cure it at home, try lying down after a few hours of having lunch. Resting might slow down the nerves that are causing the pain. Avoid spicy food and foods that are high in sodium. Drink lemon water to ease the symptoms.

If chest pain is accompanied by shortness of breath, one should immediately go to a hospital.

Get well soon!
